Celebrate the Humanity and Divinity of Jesus through the Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus

In just about every Catholic home there will be a picture of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Some even carry a smaller version of that in their wallets and purses. It is one of the most popular and significant devotions in the Catholic Church.

The picture of Jesus Christ with His heart pierced by a spear is a powerful metaphor. It is the symbol of love that conquers sin and transcends death, the symbol of the One who loves us till eternity.

The pierced heart of Jesus shows us that Jesus is truly man with a human heart and who at the same time is Son of God. The humanity and divinity of Jesus comes through in this one picture. Pope Benedict XVI at the opening of the Year for Priests in 2009 said it is regarded as a symbol of “God’s boundless and passionate love for mankind”.

One of the most significant source for devotion to the Sacred Heart in the form that is known today was St Margherita Mary Alacoque (1647-1690), a French nun of the Order of the Visitation of Holy Mary. She was said to have received at least four apparitions of Jesus Christ within a space of 18 months.

One of Jesus’ revelations to her was to spend time in the Presence of the Eucharistic Lord and to adore Him and this is the best expression of devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

Our Lord also appeared to St Faustina Kowalska (1905-1938), a Polish nun and mystic who is known for her Divine Mercy devotion. She wrote in her book The Diary of Saint Maria Faustina Kowalska: Divine Mercy in My Soul that this is what Jesus said to her: “I have opened my Heart as a living source of Mercy, from it all souls draw life, all approach with deep confidence this sea of Mercy. Sinners will obtain justification and the just will be strengthened in goodness.”

The mass of the Sacred Heart received papal approval for use in Poland and Portugal in 1765. Then more countries were added and finally in 1858 the Feast of the Sacred Heart was obligatory for the whole Church and it is to be celebrated on the Friday after the Octave of Corpus Christi. In 1928, Pope Pius XI raised the rank of the Feast Day of the Sacred Heart of Jesus to that of Double of the First Class and added a Privileged Octave of the Third Order – which makes it equal to that of Christmas and the Ascension.

Since 2002, the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is also a special Day of Prayer for the Sanctification of Priests. In 2009, the feast marked the beginning of a "Year for Priests".
