Bro Dominic Francis, OFM Cap
Departed: 30th Oct 2019

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Bro Dominic Francis, OFM Cap, who passed away this morning (30th Oct 2019) at HUKM.

Known as one of the mainstay figures of St Francis of Assisi, Bro Dominic Francis was one of the first fruits of the local Malaysian Catholic harvest. Originating from Taiping, he joined the Order of Friars Minor, Capuchin at the Batu Arang Capuchin Centre in 1962. After his training, he made his 1st simple profession on June 8, 1964 in Monte Mariano, Mangalore India. His solemn profession was also in Mangalore on June 7, 1971, before returning to Malaysia.

Together with the Indian friars and others, Bro Dominic was instrumental in the support and formation of the local community and in establishing three fraternities, i.e. Gethsemani Friary (Cheras), St Felix of Cantalice Friary (Penang) and St Pio Friary (Ulu Tiram).

He is remembered for his leadership in managing approximately 2,000 Vietnamese refugees who were welcomed at Gethsemani Friary from 1977 to 1981. When Tadika St Francis was opened in 1982, he was in charge of the administration.

He was elected as Superior of the Malaysian community on April 16, 1985. This was the first time in the South East Asia region that a religious Brother was elected as Superior.

Following his retirement, Bro Dominic became a resident at the St Francis Xavier Home for the Elderly in Cheras where he celebrated his 50th anniversary as a Friar on March 27, 2014.

Bro Dominic Francis is lovingly mourned by his Capuchin brothers, relatives and friends.
