Catechesis During the Period of Purification & Enlightenment

Catechesis During the Period of Purification & Enlightenment

Dear RCIA Coordinators,

The focus of catechesis during the period of Purification and Enlightenment is different from that during the period of the Catechumenate. The focus during the period of the Catechumenate was to help the elect and candidates for Confirmation and Reception into the Catholic Church to immerse themselves deeper into the life of Christian community through scripture and doctrine, worship, service and communion.

The focus of catechesis during the period of purification and enlightenment, however, is about helping the elect enter into a “spiritual retreat”. It is a period for them to set apart time to reflect on their journey made from the start of the RCIA and to prepare their hearts and minds for the commitment they are about to make.

Therefore, the period of Purification and Enlightenment is a time of prayer and self-reflection both for the elect and candidates and for yourselves. It is not a time for us to cover catechetical materials that we may have not done during the Catechumenate period. Therefore, do not be anxious about the sessions you are not able to cover because of the suspension of the RCIA sessions.

In a way, the suspension of the RCIA sessions could be seen as a means of enabling the candidates to take ownership and initiative for their own journey of faith towards the Sacraments and reception. Our main role at this time would be to encourage the elect and candidates to use this time to reflect on their own journey of faith and on the areas that they may have to experience conversion and to spend time to pray for others and their families.

At the same time, spend some time reflecting on your own journey of faith and areas you may need ‘conversion’. You may have been “doing” much since the RCIA process started, and now it’s a time of “being” with the Lord and allowing Him to speak to you.

In the meantime, it would be good to continue providing some materials for the elect and candidates to study and reflect upon. To assist with this, I have prepared a self-study lesson for the 4th Week of Lent which may be beneficial to the elect and candidates. The main content of this period is the ritual text and the scripture readings for the Season of Lent. The lesson has been prepared with this in mind. Over time, I will be posting more lessons.

Sincerely yours,

Dr Steven Selvaraju
